Parking Lot Smarts / 5 helpful tips for safety

• Avoid parking between a pair of tall SUVs or minivans that may make it difficult for you to back out. If you’re having trouble, ask for help from one of your passengers.

• Try backing into a parking space. Or “pull through” two spaces open nose-to-nose. It’s easier to drive out of a parking spot than it is to back out.

• Look out for children who can be difficult to see in busy parking lots and who often make quick, unpredictable movements. If you’re walking with them, hold their hands at all times.

• Use walkways and crosswalks. Look for car exhaust or reverse lights that signal a car is about to pull out.

• Place packages and shopping bags in the trunk, and don’t forget about your GPS. It takes a thief just seconds to smash a window and grab your loot.
