Elizabeth J. Pilger, elections inspector in Orchard Park

Aug. 23, 1934 – Dec. 2, 2013

Elizabeth J. “Betty” Pilger, of Orchard Park, who served as an elections inspector and was active in church and school organizations, died Monday in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. She was 79.

Born Elizabeth Thomas in Lackawanna, she was a graduate of Orchard Park High School and, for many years, had planned class reunions.

Mrs. Pilger worked a variety of jobs through the years. From 1959 to 1971, she worked in the production/scheduling department at Bethlehem Steel, where she ran a mimeograph machine in the multilith room. Before that, she was a secretary for the telephone company in Buffalo, from 1952 to 1959.

She was active at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir for several years and was an officer of the Altar and Rosary Society. She also volunteered in the gift shop at Mercy Hospital and was very active in the Parent-Teacher Organization at Windom Elementary School, serving several terms as its president.

Mrs. Pilger had worked as an inspection officer for the Board of Elections in Orchard Park. She was known for her knitted gifts – especially her Christmas stockings.

Survivors include her husband, William G.; a daughter, Jennifer; a son, Jeffrey; two sisters, Audrey Sambrotto and Judith Thomas; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. today in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 3148 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
