A 28-year-old Sanborn man was arrested today on felony robbery charges for a robbery last March 7 at the Valero Sanborn Family Mart in Sanborn, according to Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour.
The sheriff said the arrest was made through DNA testing that he said is “one of the most important tools we have to fight crime.”
The sheriff said Shawn Harris, who faces proceedings in Cambria Town Court on third-degree robbery and petit larceny charges “was developed as a suspect through DNA analysis that resulted in a match from his previous felony burglary conviction in 2005.
The expansion of the state’s DNA databank for criminals in 2012, the sheriff said, “has provided law enforcement from around the state the ability to better protect all New Yorkers. ... It certainly is a welcome development for the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.”
If convicted as charged, Harris faces a state prison term of up to seven years on the felony burglary count.
