Paul L. Schaefer, retired teacher, photographer

Paul L. Schaefer, a teacher, photographer and co-founder of the Eden Creative Sewing Center, died unexpectedly Sunday in his home in Eden. He was 66.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Iroquois Central High School and Buffalo State College. He taught for 32 years in the industrial arts department at Lake Shore Central School, retiring in 2001. He also taught driver education for many years.

Mr. Schaefer started his own photography studio, Hilltop Photo, in 1969, taking wedding photos and family portraits. Known for his ability to bring out smiles in his subjects, he retired from the business in 2008.

He and his wife, who had been working at home as a seamstress, opened the Eden Creative Sewing Center on North Main Street in Eden in 1998, providing a place for women to learn sewing and share common interests.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, the former Carolynn S. Filipiak; three sons, Todd, Scott and Michael; a brother, Neil; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 8791 S. Main St., Eden.
