$1 million court contract goes to Kideney Architects

An architectural firm has been contracted to draw up designs for a $1 million expansion to the Amherst Town Court building on John James Audubon Parkway.

Kideney Architects has been hired by the Amherst Town Board to perform the design work at a cost of $58,977.

“We hope to see grant funding for the courthouse expansion,” Supervisor Barry A. Weinstein said. “In order to do that we need to do some preliminary work.”

Kideney was one of six companies that submitted proposals for the job and came in with the lowest overall bid.

Amherst needs more space in its court building to handle prisoners, and the $1,030,500 addition is a top priority in the town’s capital improvement budget for next year.

The project would add 2,000 square feet to the building for more holding cells, officials have said.

The town is hoping to bid out the work by spring.
