Troop A state police ticketed 1,346 drivers

State Police officers in Troop A which covers all eight counties of Western New York, ticketed 1,346 drivers over the Thanksgiving Holiday period from Wednesday through Sunday, officials reported Monday.

Thirteen drivers were charged with driving while intoxicated, 402 were ticketed for speeding and 114 for what officials called “distracted driving,” using cell phones and such behavior. Sgt. Joseph Wilkinson, Troop A’s traffic supervisor, said “the primary goal of the traffic safety initiative was to deter unsafe driving behaviors and to raise the public awareness of the importance of traffic safety during one of the peak travel weekends of the year.”

Wilkinson said the Thanksgiving Holiday effort involved sobriety checkpoints throughout WNY targeting impaired drivers, underage drinking, distracted drivers and speeders.
