Champion shifts weather jobs

“Good Morning America” weather anchor Sam Champion is leaving ABC News to join The Weather Channel.

Champion will anchor the network’s new flagship morning show, which is set to debut in early 2014, Weather Channel President David Clark said Monday.

Based at The Weather Channel headquarters in Atlanta, Champion will also assume managing editor responsibilities at the network.

“With his commitment to understanding, predicting and explaining the power of weather in our lives, Sam perfectly embodies The Weather Channel brand’s philosophy, ‘It’s Amazing Out There,’ ” Clark said.

Champion called his new post “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to do what I love most at a network that lives and breathes the weather.”

His last day on “GMA” is Wednesday. He had been on that program since 2006 and joined ABC-owned local New York station WABC in 1988.

Kelly ‘Rain’ suit for sale

A memorabilia collector is selling the gray wool suit Gene Kelly wore as he joyously danced in a downpour in the Hollywood musical “Singin’ in the Rain.”

The suit is expected to sell for more than $20,000 when Heritage Auctions offers it up Friday in Dallas. Memorabilia collector Gerry Sola has had the suit for more than four decades after buying it for $10 at a 1970 sale of MGM props and wardrobe items.

Sola, a retired postal worker, had traveled from his home in Northern California to Los Angeles for the 1970 MGM sale, which progressed from an auction to a sale of racks of clothing.

“If there was one thing in my life I could do again, I’d love to go to that auction again. It was the most exciting thing to ever happen to me,” Sola said.

Rembering Gandolfini

Cast members of “The Sopranos” were on hand over the weekend as a New Jersey town remembered native son James Gandolfini.

Park Ridge dedicated a section of Park Avenue to the actor best known for his role as mobster Tony Soprano in the TV series. Gandolfini died in Italy in June.

Cast members Steve Schirripa, Vincent Curatola, Tony Sirico, Dominic Chianese, Vincent Pastore and John Ventimiglia were among the hundreds of people who turned out Sunday in the northern New Jersey town where Gandolfini grew up and returned often.

CMA hosts will return

Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan are returning as hosts of the next year’s Academy of Country Music Awards.

The country music stars teamed up at this year’s show, and things went so well they’re coming back for the April 6 awards at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The academy also announced Monday that Florida Georgia Line will host its Fan Jam, the parallel event that runs concurrently with the awards.

Bryan and FGL are two of the hottest acts in Nashville at the moment. Bryan won the ACM’s fan-voted entertainer of the year award in April in something of an upset, and Florida Georgia Line was the academy’s new artist of the year.
