Urban League to honor Ransom at gala tonight

The Buffalo Urban League Inc. will present its highest honor to an individual to William H. Ransom Jr., former president and general manager of WKBW-TV, at its 2013 Gala this evening in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

Ransom will receive the William L. Evans & Whitney M. Young Jr. Humanitarian Award.

Also honored will be Roger K. and Betsy M. Strother with the Family Life Award; Tuxedo Junction and the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County with Community Service Awards; and Monica A. Manney and Jalen Z. Wright with Outstanding Youth Awards.

A special award, the President’s Exemplary Services Award, will be given to Robert P. Holliday, vice president and general manager of AT&T Mobility – Upstate New York.

Emcees will be Linda Pellegrino, hostess of “AM Buffalo” on WKBW-TV, and Artvoice writer Elizabeth Lewin.

The evening will begin at 6 with a silent auction and a reception with music, followed at 7:30 by dinner and the awards presentations. Dancing to live music by the New York City Dimensions Band will follow.

The Colored Musicians Club All-Star Jazz Quartet will provide a special closing.
