Close to 3,000 Buffalo residents assembled to take the firefighter exam that started this morning at the Buffalo Convention Center. Fire Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield Jr. said this is the first time a hiring list will be established from an exam that requires firefighters to live in the city for their entire careers. Whitfield added that approximately 50 percent of the people taking the test are minorities and that will result in a department that better represents the racial makeup of Buffalo. Test results are expected early next year.
