Joan M. Suttel, honored for work as volunteer

A Mass of Christian Burial for Joan M. Suttel, an award-winning volunteer, will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday in Resurrection Catholic Church, 130 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga, after prayers at 8:30 in Pacer Funeral Home, 2275 George Urban Blvd., Depew.

Ms. Suttel, of Depew, died Saturday in ElderWood at Cheektowaga. She was 78.

Born Joan M. Zehler in Bennington, she had worked in the human resources department at Ingersoll-Rand Corp., formerly known as Aro Corp., in Cheektowaga.

She was widely known for her volunteer work.

In 2009, she was honored as National Volunteer of the Year by the American Health Care Association and Senior Volunteer of the Year by the New York State Health Facilities Association. The organizations represent long-term care facilities.

Ms. Suttel was a volunteer at ElderWood’s Maplewood site, spending about five days a week at the facility, transporting residents around the building and to off-site events.

She also helped with religious services and other activities.

Ms. Suttel was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Francis and Denis Zehler.
