Two local tax preparers were sentenced Monday by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny to six months’ home confinement for conspiring to defraud the Internal Revenue Service.

Brenda Jeffries-Silmon, 54, of Cheektowaga, and Marcel Richardson-Redden, 58, of Buffalo admitted filing 58 fake tax returns on behalf of clients.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward H. White said the pair’s criminal activity lasted four years and cost the federal and state government $195,000, money they will have to repay.

The women’s defense attorneys cited Richardson-Redden’s gambling problems and Jeffries-Silmon’s overly aggressive approach to building their business as reasons for their illegal conduct.
