Licata earns MAC honors for week

University at Buffalo quarterback Joe Licata was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday following his record-breaking performance against Toledo.

The sophomore signal caller from Williamsville South threw for a school-record 497 yards and four touchdowns in a 51-41 loss at Toledo. He nearly single-handedly brought the Bulls back from a 38-0 deficit as he completed 24-of-36 for 382 yards and all four touchdowns in the second half.

Licata is having a breakout season for the Bulls. He has completed 179-of-295 passes for 2,235 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. His 20 touchdowns are second in school history for a single season, trailing only Drew Willy who threw 25 TDs in 2008.

It’s the first time for Licata and the eighth straight week and ninth overall that a UB player has won a MAC player of the week award.

In women’s volleyball, senior middle blocker Carissa McKenna was named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week after she had 11 blocks in a five-set win over Bowling Green.

One night earlier, she helped the Bulls to a 3-0 shutout over Miami with five kills in eight attempts. McKenna leads the Bulls in blocking and she is currently eighth in school history in career blocks.

The weekly honor is the first this season for McKenna and the third straight week that a UB player has won defensive honors.
