Decision on Amherst housing units put off

A mix of market-rate apartments and townhouses is being proposed on four acres at the end of Linwood Avenue and South Forest Road in Amherst.

The 55-unit project is being planned by developer Andrew Romanowski on two vacant, wooded parcels at 170 Linwood and 186 South Forest.

The Amherst Town Board on Monday night was asked to rezone the property from residential to multi-family residential, but the board held off making a decision until Dec. 16.

“There’s a lot of loose ends and, quite frankly, I don’t understand them all,” Supervisor Barry A. Weinstein said.

The project includes four two-story buildings with 44 apartments and two single-story structures with a total of 11 one- and two-bedroom units, explained Sean W. Hopkins, the attorney representing the developer.

“We’d like to be able to start in the spring,” Hopkins said.

Four people spoke about the project Monday but the hearing wasn’t contentious. The developer has been working with residents in the neighborhood since June to address concerns, including water, sewer and drainage. Linwood will also remain a dead end.

“The developers have made a good-faith effort to keep in contact with the neighbors and address our concerns, pretty much to our satisfaction,” said Donald Montalto, a spokesman for the residents on Linwood.

Although when prodded by Council Member Mark A. Manna, Montalto acknowledged the residents felt they were being squeezed by this project on one end and the new Wyndham Garden Hotel at Main Street and South Forest on the other.

In other business, the board:

• Ordered 1,290 feet of sidewalk installed along commercial property at 2295, 2305 and 2365 Millersport Highway in Getzville. Residents in the Asbury Pointe Retirement Community made the request, and the town acknowledged these gaps in the neighborhood network of sidewalks create a safety hazard.

• Restricted parking on the north side of Westmoreland Road from Washington Highway to the west side of the rear driveway of Amherst Central High School.

• Agreed to pay a bill for the outside legal counsel who was retained to defend the Zoning Board of Appeals in a lawsuit over the Hyatt Place Hotel project.
