Scrapper avoids prison in copper theft

LOCKPORT – Dominique D. Harrell of Niagara Falls drew five years’ probation Friday in Niagara County Court for his guilty pleas to two felonies in connection with the March 1 theft of metal from an apartment house on Whitney Avenue in the Falls.

Harrell, 20, of Willow Avenue, had pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief. He also must make restitution of $1,070.

Police surrounded the building and arrested Harrell after a neighbor saw a man enter the structure. Damage was found to some copper pipes in the basement.

“I didn’t have no money at the time,” Harrell said.

“Why didn’t you get a job then?” County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas retorted. “You told Probation this was an easy way to make money, scrapping.”
