Buffalo State volleyball bows in NCAAs

The most successful season in the history of the Buffalo State women’s volleyball program came to an end on Thursday with a loss in four games in the NCAA Tournament. The Bengals (25-10), making the program’s first appearance in the tournament, lost to the University of Chicago (27-10) at Calvin College, 25-13, 24-26, 25-20 and 25-14.

Kayla Pyc (Grand Island) led Buffalo State with 10 kills and three blocks. Senior Kelsey Bashore finished with 23 assists and 15 digs, and fellow senior Chelsea Moore (Kenmore West) had 24 digs.

Buffalo State fell behind 6-1 early in the first game, dropping the first set, 25-13. They regrouped in the second set and overcame an 11-7 deficit to eventually pull even with a 26-24 win. Buffalo State carried the momentum into the third set and built an early 8-2 lead, but the Maroons pulled away late for the five-point win. Chicago scored the first six points of the fourth set and never looked back.

• The University at Buffalo men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete this weekend at the NCAA Northeastern Regional Championships at Van Corlandt Park in the Bronx.

Senior team captain Zach Ahart (Wheatfield) became the first UB male cross country runner to earn an individual MAC Championship. The young UB squad will also count on Cameron Bruce, Alec Peinkofer, Barrett Kemp and Pier Berkmans this week.

For the women, freshman Caroline Brown has earned the team’s best finish at the MAC Championships, taking 25th in 22:07. Junior Gabby Leo has been a consistent runner all season long.
