Rock icon Dave Davies to play Bear’s Den on Saturday

OK, so it’s a tough sell to suggest that anyone should feel sorry for Dave Davies. The guy’s a legend, he’s one of the most influential electric guitarists of all time, and he was a significant part of one of the greatest bands in rock history, the Kinks. Surely, the man has had a great life, right? Money, women, limos and so forth?

Bear with me for a moment, though, and imagine what it must have been like to be in a band with Ray Davies, one of rock’s most sophisticated and consistently excellent songwriters. Standing next to Ray, pretty much anyone would come off as second best. Add the fact that brothers Ray and Dave have always had a tumultuous – that’s being kind – relationship, and you can see where, over time, even a songwriter, singer and guitarist as eminently gifted as Dave might grow a bit frustrated. After all, it wasn’t just the game-changing riff propelling “You Really Got Me” that made Dave a legend. The list of songs he’s at least partly responsible for includes gems like “Strangers,” “Death of a Clown,” “Rats” and “Living On a Thin Line,” all of which are indelible classics.

Now fully recovered from a stroke suffered in 2004, with fresh talk of a songwriting reconciliation with brother Ray making the rounds, and new album “I Will Be Me” earning positive notices, Davies has taken to the road once again. He and his band will play an intimate show at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Bear’s Den, Seneca Niagara Casino, Niagara Falls. Tickets start at $40 (box office, Ticketmaster).
