Gin Blossoms bring power-pop to Bear’s Den on Friday

One of the finest American power-pop outfits to emerge from the 1990s, the Gin Blossoms carved a niche on the basis of buoyant, sunny melodies, impossible-to-forget chorus hooks, and the layered, jangly guitars that can be traced back to work by the Byrds and Big Star.

Though the band had to overcome crushing tragedy in its earliest days – co-founder Doug Hopkins committed suicide shortly after “Hey Jealousy,” a song he wrote, earned the band a gold disc – a steady stream of inspired recordings has maintained a sizable and loyal cult following.

The latest of these recordings is titled “No Chocolate Cake,” and tunes from it are likely to populate the set list when the band performs at 8 p.m. Friday in the Bear’s Den at the Seneca Niagara Casino. Tickets start at $55 (box office, Ticketmaster).
