Cooper Power cutting 79 jobs in Olean

Cooper Power Systems is cutting 79 jobs at its Olean plant, as parent company Eaton Corp. moves some of the electrical products plant’s work to other North American facilities.

The layoffs of 74 hourly and five salaried workers will start in the second quarter of 2014 and will be completed in the second quarter of 2015, said Mark Horner, an Eaton spokesman. The plant presently has 199 employees.

Some of the plant’s work is being shifted to a new Eaton location in Mexico, among other locations. But Horner said some work is also being transferred to the Olean plant from a different facility in Mexico.

Eaton acquired Cooper Industries, including the Olean facility, last year in a deal valued at about $11.5 billion.
