Three-time burglar given conditional discharge

LOCKPORT – A Town of Lockport man who pleaded guilty to three burglaries was granted a one-year conditional discharge Wednesday after successfully completing the judicial diversion program of court-supervised drug treatment.

State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. said the performance of Matthew E. Bartz in diversion was one of the best he’d seen. Bartz risked 21 years in prison if he had washed out of the treatment program he entered in February 2012.

Bartz, 32, of Bartz Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree burglary for breaking into a hair salon on East Avenue in Lockport Nov. 26, 2011, and two businesses in the Bewley Building on Market Street three days earlier. Police sought him in a three-day manhunt and at first accused him of as many as eight burglaries.
