As the chill of winter approaches, the idea of some wholesome grandmother-crafted soup becomes even more appealing. If you are Ukrainian, you might especially be interested in getting yourself to 1219 Abbott Road in Lackawanna on Saturday or Sunday.

That’s when the ladies of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church offer borscht, or beet soup, plus pierogi and other Ukrainian home cooking favorites, at the church’s annual bazaar.

“It’s basic Ukrainian food,” said organizer Elaine Nowadly. But the church ladies’ versions of potato and sauerkraut pierogi have been known to inspire customers to drive from Pennsylvania for a taste. They’re available for $9 a dozen, or 75 cents each.

The borscht, with a chicken broth base, goes for $1 a cup or $4 a quart. Heartier fare is available, too. Cabbage rolls, ground beef and rice wrapped in a cabbage leaf and stewed in tomato sauce, are $1.50. Polish sausage and sauerkraut also will be available, as a platter or a sandwich.

There’s beer, wine, coffee, soda and dessert from a baked goods table with cookies and other sweets made by parishioners, usually including some Ukrainian varieties. “Whatever the spirit moves them to bring,” Nowadly said.

Nowadly explained that St. Nicholas’ is in Buffalo, but lacking a suitable venue, the parish holds the annual event at Our Lady of Perpetual Help’s church hall in Lackawanna.

Including a 300-item basket raffle, it’s the church’s biggest fundraiser of the year. “We get a lot of the neighbors, because we’ve built up a following that come year after year. Not just our parishioners, but people from South Buffalo and Lackawanna.”
