Edward J. Planter, engineer, veteran of three wars

Edward J. Planter, of Buffalo, a veteran of three wars, died Thursday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Buffalo, after a short battle with cancer. He was 85.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Planter studied auto mechanics at Burgard Vocational High School and left to enlist in the Army Air Forces in World War II. He left the service briefly in 1948, graduated from Burgard and enlisted in the Air Force, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

An airplane mechanic, he was stationed all over the world during his 22½ years of service and rose to the rank of technical sergeant.

After his military career, he earned an associate’s degree at Erie Community College North and studied at the University at Buffalo. He worked as an engineer for Harrison Radiator Corp. in Lockport until he retired in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Hopie J. Barber; a son, Edward C. “Charles”; and three daughters, Sharon Johnson, Zina L. and Hopie A. “Angel.”

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Elim Christian Fellowship, 70 Chalmers Ave.
