Miami completes sweep of Canisius hockey

OXFORD, Ohio – Canisius (1-4-0) was outshot badly and lost a second straight non-conference men’s hockey game to Miami (Ohio), 5-2, Saturday at Steve Cady Arena.

The host RedHawks (5-2-1), who are ranked sixth in the nation, had 18 shots and took a 3-1 first-period lead on goals by Austin Czarnik (power play), Alex Gacek and Anthony Louis. Canisius tied the game, 1-1, on a power-play tally by Ben Danford before Miami began its run. Danford, a senior defenseman, leads the Griffs with six points (1-5-6) after five games.

Jimmy Mullin scored with the man advantage to make it 4-1 early in the second before Kyle Gibbons tallied his third of the season for Canisius — Danford assisted — with 47 seconds left in the period. However, Czarnik scored again at 11:54 to restore the RedHawks’ three-goal advantage.

Goalie Tony Capobianco of Canisius faced 45 shots. Canisius managed 25 against Miami’s Jay Williams.

“After a slow start to the game we battled very hard against what I think is the top team in the nation right now,” said Canisius coach Dave Smith. “We showed a lot of growth, especially on the power play, since our first game almost a month ago. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves and what it takes to be successful.”

Canisius will play at Robert Morris on Friday before hosting Mercyhurst on Saturday.

In SUNYAC play, host Oswego State edged Buffalo State (1-1, 1-1), 3-2. Freshmen Adam Rossi and Taylor Price scored for the Bengals while goalie Kevin Carr had 50 saves, 26 in the third period.
