Bona transfer debuts with a 23-point showing

Junior college transfer Andell Cumberbatch made his debut for St. Bonaventure, scoring 21 of his game-high 23 points Saturday in a 102-57 exhibition win over Mansfield (Pa.) University in the Reilly Center. Cumberbatch, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, made 10 of 15 shots including 2 of 4 threes. Matthew Wright added 16 points and 10 assists while Marquise Simmons had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Bona women defeated Edinboro University, 65-43, also on Saturday at Reilly as sophomore Katie Healy (Lancaster) led with 17 points.

In a women’s exhibition at Alumni Arena, the University at Buffalo used a 19-2 run in the second half to overcome Buffalo State, 76-54, Kristen Sharkey had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who trailed by 35-32 before the rally. Staci McElroy had 13 points for Buffalo State.

SWIMMING: Mike Dugan won the 50 freestyle (20.81) and the 100 butterfly (50.27), but the UB men lost to Penn State, 155-137 at Alumni Arena. … Freshman Montanna Valler won the 1,000 freestyle (11:05.56) for the Niagara women in a 191-101 loss to Youngstown State. … Both the Canisius men and women defeated Geneseo, by a 144-99 score. Eddie Quarantillo scored 316.60 in 1-meter diving to break the school record he set last week, and he set another school mark off the 3-meter board (342.07). He qualified for the NCAA Zone meet in both events.

MEN’S SOCCER: Matthew Wong scored with a rebound off a free kick to tie the game for Buffalo State (9-9-1) but host Plattsburgh scored in the 83rd minute for a 2-1 win that eliminated the Bengals in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC Tournament.
