YNN to get a name change

This is what I’m thinking:

The tentative revised lineup of Time Warner Cable here in December includes the name change from YNN, which the 24-hour cable news channel has been know as in Western New York since its inception.

The name change reportedly is part of TWC’s national rebranding campaign.


The Deadspin report on the animated series being pitched by the Gronkowskis of Western New York notes that “Family Guy” writer Ricky Blitt “supposedly” is interested in being involved in the project.

If the name is familiar, Blitt was the creator of “The Winner,” a short-lived 2007 Fox comedy that was set in Buffalo in 1994 about a socially awkward guy (played by Rob Corddry) who became the richest man in Buffalo. At the time, the Canadian writer said he set the series here because he loves the city. The first five episodes included references to the Buffalo Bills.


Had to laugh Thursday when Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel ended his report on “NBC Nightly News” by telling anchor Brian Williams the following: “If you want to go surfing today, head to Buffalo – 12 to 14 feet waves on Lake Erie.”


Channel 2’s Melissa Holmes announced this morning on “Daybreak” that she and her husband, Buffalo News sportswriter Jay Skurski, are expecting their first child in March. She gave a few hints Thursday night on Facebook that the announcement was coming. Since she co-anchors “Daybreak,” Holmes undoubtedly has had plenty of practice getting up early.


Channel 4 is running a promo featuring Buffalo bus driver Darnell Barton that attempts to capitalize on his heroism by noting “When you’re for Buffalo,” you rush to help your neighbors and do the right thing. The promo ends by noting “We’re proud to work for you.” Barton deserves praise, but the station should do the right thing and drop the inference his heroism had anything to do with the station’s motto.


Speaking of promos, Channel 4 has to do some editing for one of its “Wake Up!” promos that feature reporter Anthony Congi. Congi has announced this is his last week at the station.


Tuesday’s episode of “Top Gear” on the History Channel set in Buffalo had a 3.7 live local rating, which is impressive by cable standards. To put the rating in further perspective, the 3.7 is higher than about one-third of all prime-time shows get here on broadcast networks live and seven days after they air.


The Boston Red Sox’s World Series clincher Wednesday night over St. Louis had a 9.6 rating on WUTV and was the highest-rated program airing that night. The six-game series averaged about a 7.5 rating here, which was slightly higher than the four-game sweep by San Francisco over Detroit in 2012.

About 20 prime-time series average about a 10 rating in Western New York and about 34 series average higher than the Series averaged.

However, the Series gets a strong male demographic, which is harder for entertainment series to get.
