Week Nine: Today’s high school football games

Game of the day

St. Joe’s Marauders (6-2, 4-0) at Canisius Crusaders (6-2, 4-0), 1 p.m. at Stransky Complex, 2885 Clinton St., West Seneca (#STJvCAN on #PrepTalkLive).

It’s time for Chapter 82.

The 82nd meeting of the rivals comes with the Monsignor Martin Association championship on the line. Both teams have lost a pair of games to tough nonleague opponents while both teams have gone undefeated in league play thus far. Both teams have lost to Rochester’s Aquinas, the top-ranked team in the New York State Sportswriters Class AA poll. Canisius lost at Cardinal Mooney of Ohio, 9-7; St. Joe’s lost at Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa., 56-7.

Canisius is ranked second in The Buffalo News large school poll while St. Joe’s is fourth.

Canisius has struggled at times on offense – its loss to Aquinas came by a 3-0 score, and during its most notable win of the season, against Walsh Jesuit of Ohio, standout running back Qadree Ollison was moved to quarterback. Senior Zach Liberatore and junior Jakob Loucks have both seen time at quarterback and may both play today.

St. Joe’s started the season with an outstanding win against St. Anthony’s of Long Island – which is currently fifth in the state Class AA poll – but has been hurt by injuries in the latter part of the season. Standout senior Rod Payne is out for the season with a knee injury. The Marauders’ offense is led by multi-talented senior Nigel Davis and sophomore quarterback Mike McCarthy – they’re taking on a Canisius defense that has not allowed a touchdown against its first team all season.

More key games today

• West Seneca East (7-1) at Sweet Home (8-0), Class A quarterfinal, 2 p.m. at Robert P. Barczak Stadium. This is a matchup of last year’s sectional final, won by Sweet Home, 28-7. This year’s teams are very different than last year’s, but both teams have filled in holes from last year’s depth chart. WSE’s only loss was at home to South Park in Week Five. Sweet Home has won 68 straight games against Section VI competition, which includes six straight Section VI titles.

• Lackawanna (5-3) vs. Cleveland Hill (8-0), Class C semifinal, 2 p.m. at Depew. This is a rematch of a Class C North game in which the Steelers, playing in their first season in C after being a B for more than a decade, lost at home to the Golden Eagles, 24-8. That loss was part of a three-game losing streak for Lackawanna (it also lost to Akron and Williamsville North of Class A). The Steelers are coming off an impressive road win at Salamanca. The Golden Eagles, defending Section VI Class C champions, have been a top five small school for most of the season. The game moved due to concerns about the grass field at Cleve Hill.

• Akron (6-2) vs. Fredonia (8-0), Class C semifinal, 5 p.m. at Dunkirk. The final berth for The Ralph will be determined in an intriguing matchup between a hot Akron team and a Fredonia squad that has been dominant most of the season. Fredonia is ranked fourth among small schools while Akron is seventh.

• St. Mary’s (4-3) at Cardinal O’Hara (1-6), 2 p.m. These traditional Monsignor Martin small school rivals close out the season in the Town of Tonawanda as the host Hawks try to take down a Lancers team that owns a win over Timon and has been ranked in The News small school top 10 for much of the season.
