LOCKPORT – A Town of Niagara sex offender was sentenced to two years in Niagara County Jail Friday for stealing large amounts of metal from inside a former Carborundum Co. plant in Niagara Falls.
County Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas ordered that after his sentence, Gerald D. Zimmerman, 54, of Lockport Street, must repay $20,000 to John Simon, owner of the former Carborundum electrical products plant at 3425 Hyde Park Blvd. Zimmerman stole pipe, wire and other metal there from September 2011 to February 2012.
In September 2012, Zimmerman was given three months to pay full restitution or face indictment. He didn’t pay the money, and ended up pleading guilty to reduced charges of petit larceny and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
Assistant District Attorney Heather A. DeCastro told Zimmerman to use his time in jail “to think about the kind of life he leads, because it hasn’t changed in a decade or more.”
Zimmerman is a Level 3 sex offender because of a 2005 conviction for molesting a 6-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl in Niagara Falls.
