Police identify pickup truck driver killed in Lockport crash

TOWN OF LOCKPORT – State Police identified the victim of a fatal crash Wednesday afternoon as James J. Silva, 60, of North Tonawanda.

Trooper William Higgins said Silva was driving on a straight stretch of road, just north of Robinson Road on the Lockport Bypass/Route 93 when a witness driving behind Silva saw him veer into the path of an oncoming dump truck.

The Kenworth dump truck, operated by Edmund Colan, 53, of Grand Island, was found off the roadway in a field when police arrived.

The impact caused Silva’s small pickup truck to burst into flames, according to State Police Public Information Officer Victor Morales.

Higgins said that Silva was trapped in his pickup as it caught on fire, but witnesses said he appeared to have been killed on impact. Silva was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It’s still hard to say what caused the crash. We don’t know,” said Higgins, adding, “It could be medical or driver inattention. We may never know.”

He said it does not appear to be alcohol-related.

The dump truck driver was not hurt or charged, according to Morales.
