Michael Wojcicki, athletic director, physical education teacher and coach at Mary Queen of Angels Regional Catholic School in Cheektowaga, has been named the recipient of the annual Tim Russert/Sister Lucille Socciarelli/Father John Sturm Making a Difference Award. The honor, presented by the Diocese of Buffalo, will be awarded to “Coach Mike” at the 2014 Making a Difference Dinner on Jan. 30 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Wojcicki has worked in Catholic education for 31 years, including 23 years at Mary Queen of Angels School.


The Buffalo Stars Midget Program announced that two of the team’s under-16 full season players have advanced to junior hockey. Forward Austin Gallagher has been claimed by the Springfield Pics of the Empire Junior League while defenseman Tim O’Connor has been picked up by the Jersey Shore Wildcats of the Northern States Junior League.

FOOTBALL: A book on the history of Gowanda football, “Through the Eyes of a Panther,” will be unveiled at the Gowanda VFW Club on Saturday, Nov. 30, from 6-10 p.m. An open house will welcome former high school and youth coaches, players, cheerleaders and team managers. HOCKEY: HockeyBuff’s elite senior league is seeking players 35 and older for Tuesday-Wednesday division that plays at Northtown Center at Amherst. Call 432-0047. … West Seneca Youth Hockey Association is looking for all current and former players, coaches, parents and board members to join them as they celebrate their 40th anniversary at Lucarelli’s, 1830 Abbott Road, Lackawanna, on Nov. 9 from 7-11 p.m. Live music by Randle and the Late Night Scandals, 50/50, Chinese auction, signed Patrick Kane jersey, Goo Goo Dolls signed guitar and many other one-of-a-kind items will be auctioned off. Tickets are $20 and include beer, wine, pop and food. … The Buffalo Stars will officially open the 2013-14 House League season on Saturday. Four Buffalo Stars House “MOHL” teams will compete as follows: 3 p.m. – Peewee MOHL vs. Southtowns #3; 4:15 p.m. – Bantam MOHL #1 vs. Buffalo Bisons; 5:45 p.m. – Bantam MOHL #2 vs. Saints #2; 7:15 p.m. – Midget MOHL vs. Amherst. The Stars will also host a “Try Hockey Free for a Day” program at 2 p.m. to give kids who are new to the game an opportunity to give it a try. ICE SKATING: Learn to skate classes for hockey players and figure skaters will be held Nov. 11 through Jan. 24. The classes will be at Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena in Lewiston on Mondays, 5:15-5:45 p.m., Wednesdays, 6:00-6:30 p.m., and Fridays, 4:55-5:25 p.m. Classes are also held at Hockey Outlet Ice Complex in Wheatfield on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5 p.m. Classes are for ages 4 to adult.
