Niagara hockey falls at Air Force

The Niagara University hockey team came up short in its comeback bid at Atlantic Hockey Association foe Air Force on Sunday night, falling 7-4 to the Falcons at Cadet Ice Arena.

Patrick Conte, Matt Chartrain, Mike Conderman and Ryan Rashid scored for the Purple Eagles (1-4-1, 1-1-1), with Rashid’s pulling NU within 5-4 with 2:09 left in regulation. But Air Force’s Cole Gunner potted an empty-netter with Niagara starter Adrian Ignagni on the bench for the extra attacker with 1:09 left. The Falcons added a power-play goal with 13 seconds left to send the crowd of 1,607 home happy.

Air Force took a 4-2 lead into the first intermission as Ben Carey, Chad Demers and Scott Holm scored thrice in a span of 7 minutes, 51 seconds to reverse a 2-1 deficit. Ryan Timar and Jason Fabian also scored for the Falcons (4-2-0, 2-0-0), who recorded two power-play goals, a short-handed goal and empty-net goal to go along with three even-strength tallies.

Niagara returns to action Nov. 8 at Ohio State.

In other hockey news, freshman Maddie Elia (Nichols, Buffalo Bisons) scored her first collegiate goal for Boston University on Saturday in a 2-1 win over Yale.
