Pernick coaching swan song tonight
Lancaster will bid farewell to another longtime coach tonight when Sue Pernick coaches in the last home volleyball match of her career against Kenmore West at 6 p.m. in the Java gym. The Redskins drew the No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 4 Clarence on Tuesday in a Class AA quarterfinal. The Red Devils beat Lancaster twice in league play.
Kenmore West’s coaching staff had three of Pernick’s former players on it. Head coach Kelly Schrantz-Strong and assistant coaches Brittany Lis and Alex Stribing are all Pernick disciples. Pernick started coaching in Lancaster in the fall of 1990.
Under Pernick, Lancaster appeared in the New York State finals seven years in a row, from 2001 to 2007, winning in 2004 and 2006. “I’ve tried to stayed focused on the season, but walking into the school the other night I looked up at that Lancaster High and thought I’ve been looking at that since 1971 when I played. I didn’t want to tear up too much, we got a game tonight.”
