Premier tax abatement is a benefit to the town

A woman from Amherst recently wrote about the loss of $5 million in revenue due to Premier Liquor receiving a $12 million tax exemption and payment in lieu of taxes of $7 million. Has she considered in the total the amount of taxes being paid on the long-vacant property? I am sure in the long run the payment in lieu of taxes is significantly greater than what was being paid on vacant land.

The former Premier location was immediately replaced by another big business paying taxes. Many individuals look only at the tax exemption amount, but fail to realize the amount of money being paid is greater than the amount previously paid on a piece of property. If one really considers all the facts, Amherst is receiving an increase in revenue because of this transaction.
