Kenmore tie gives title to Barker
A week ago, it was the Kenmore field hockey team that was celebrating after a 1-0 win over Barker, ending the Raiders 114-game Niagara-Orleans League unbeaten streak.
Tuesday, it was Barker’s turn to celebrate - while it was a disappointing day for Kenmore.
The Raiders captured their eighth straight N-O title with a 4-0 victory over Roy-Hart while visiting Akron was playing Kenmore to a 1-1 tie.
The two outcomes broke a tie for first place in the league. Barker finished 11-1 while Kenmore closed the regular season at 10-1-2. Akron (8-3) was third.
Under tiebreaker rules in place this season, Akron and Kenmore went to a shootout after finishing, 1-1, at the end of regulation and one 10-minute overtime.
Four of the five shooters on each side scored in the shootout, leaving the match tied. Kaeli Mathias, the last Kenmore shooter, gave her team a 4-3 lead, but Molly Jennings came through as Akron’s last shooter to tie it.
Mathias, the defending N-O goals scoring champion, tallied her 19th of the season but Sarah Schultz tied it for Akron with an assist from Claudia Stone. Both goals came in the first half. With 20 goals, Stone finished ahead of Kaeli Mathias for the league goal-scoring title this time.
“You’ve got to give Claudia credit,” said Kenmore coach Jeff Orlowski. “Going for a scoring title you might be a little individualistic, but she wasn’t. She was playing a team game and passed it off for the tying goal.
“We’re a little disappointed, but we’ve still got a sectional to win,” Orlowski said of his Kenmore team. “This gives us a little motivation.”
“Mary had her team playing really well,” Orlowski said of Akron coach Mary Borden.
