Fredonia Rotary Club to fund gazebo improvements

FREDONIA – Major improvements to the gazebo in historic Barker Common will be funded by the local Rotary Club.

At the meeting of the Fredonia Village Board, held Monday in village hall, the trustees approved a contract with the Rotary Club to replace the roof, install new electrical wiring, repair wood work, paint the gazebo and add a plaque.

Work has already started and is expected to be completed this fall.

The Fredonia Rotary Club is receiving fundraising help from college students at SUNY Fredonia.

Members of the college’s Rotaract Club will conduct a costumed fun run on Sunday from 11:30 to 4 p.m.

Proceeds from the run will help with the improvements at the gazebo.

Also at the meeting:

• The board accepted the report on unpaid village taxes. A total of $126,372 will be turned over to Chautauqua County. The county will reimburse the village and take action to collect the taxes or sell the property.

• An agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for permission for a contractor to enter Canadaway Creek for an erosion mitigation project was approved.

The area to be repaired has a sewer line and work may help prevent a line collapse, according to the agreement.

Work also will be done in sections of the creek in the town of Dunkirk.

Residents may have an interruption in water service and will be asked to conserve water on Sunday, Nov. 17 while work is done at the water treatment plant.

• Trustees were asked to consider hiring a grant writer for two projects: a salt barn to be shared by the township, village and school district and flood hazard mitigation work at the spillway area.

Trustee Joe Cerrie, acting for absent Mayor Steve Keefe, said the two projects are still in the early stages.

• The Pump it Up Fitness Center was authorized to use village sidewalks on Thanksgiving morning for a 5K run.

• Notice was sent to the town of Pomfret that repairs should be made to a private water line that is leaking near Route 83.
