Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs is set to end the longstanding practice of doling out a limited number of license plates with such coveted prefixes as “EC or ER.”
Instead the clerk’s office will list all available plates on the county’s website with a simple request form.
“Plates will then be awarded on a first-come-first-serve basis. My goal here is to remove any perception of favoritism in awarding these plates,” said Jacobs.
License plates with special prefixes such as, B, BF, BL, BU, CE, and E” cost the same as a typical license plates, which are $28.75. About 70 such plates are available through the clerk’ and can only be issued for passenger vehicles.
For a list of available plates, visit www.erie.gov/clerkplates and complete the on-line request form, or call the Auto Bureau Call Center at 858-7450.
