Eleanor Payne, the Veronica E. Middle School vice principal credited with saving a 10-year-old student’s life by performing CPR, is being honored for her heroic deed.

The Buffalo Niagara Division of the American Heart Association will present Payne with a Heartsaver Hero Award Monday. Three others, William Brodie, Margaret Cammarano and Barbara Nolan, who assisted in the lifesaving rescue, will also be recognized with awards.

The awards will be given at Monday’s Board of Education Meeting at the middle school, 1100 Ransom Road, at 7:30 p.m.

• A book club for adults will discuss “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexie at the Grand Island Memorial Library, 1715 Bedell Road, at 7 p.m. Monday. Free and open to the public. For more information, call 773-7124.

• The Grand Island Art Club will host its second annual Isle of Spooky and Isle of Horror haunted house Friday at the Nike Air Base, 3278 Whitehaven Road, Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Special hours will be held for younger children Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $4 pre-sale, $5 at the door. Adults interested in learning about e-books and e-readers can attend a free class at the Grand Island Memorial Library Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your e-reader to class and register by calling 773-7124.
