Kacz, Buffalo State strong-arm Frostburg; Simmons shines for ECC

Casey Kacz threw for five touchdowns and ran for two more as Buffalo State blasted visiting Frostburg State, 60-28, in an Empire 8 game Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field.

Kacz finished 21 of 30 for 203 yards and ran for 43 yards on six carries. Caesarae Lewis led the Bengals with eight catches for 86 yards with three touchdowns.

Rich Pete paced the ground game with 83 yards on 11 carries, and freshman Trey Jones added 82 yards and a score on eight fourth-quarter carries.

Buffalo State forced three first-half turnovers that set up three touchdown drives and the Bengals took a 29-14 lead into halftime.

The Bengals opened the scoring in the second half with a 10-yard touchdown reception by Billy Joiner for his first collegiate score to push the lead to 36-14, and the rout was on.

Buffalo State will be on the road the next two weeks, beginning with a trip to Utica for a 2 p.m. kickoff next Saturday.

ECC edged on road

The Erie Community College Kats lost their second straight close road game, falling to Alfred State 35-34.

The Kats had two chances in the final 18 seconds to take the lead, but failed to convert.

Quarterback Connor Simmons broke the ECC single season school record for passing yards and completions. He had 23 completions, giving him 118 for the season to break the record of 100 held since 2008 by David Barry.

Simmons’ 274 yards gives him 1,218 to eclipse the mark of 1,106 held since 2003 by Mike Currie.

The Kats were in the game until the final seconds. With 18 seconds left, Tahj Dennis caught a 10-yard TD pass from Simmons bringing the score to 35-34. They received two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct which backed them up to the 33-yard line for the extra point. The conversion was missed.

The Kats had one final chance after they recovered the on-side kick with 15 seconds left.

After a few plays by Simmons to bring the ball into Pioneer territory, the Kats attempted a 49-yard field goal that was wide right.

The Kats (1-6) will host Onondaga CC at Jim Ball Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
