Sister Barbara Ciarico, Trocaire president

Sister Barbara Ciarico, former president of Trocaire College, died Thursday at the Mercy Center Health Care Unit. She was 83.

The former Barbara Jean Ciarico entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1948 and made her perpetual profession on March 30, 1954.

Sister Barbara was born and educated in Albion. She attended St. Joseph School in Albion and Albion High School. She received her bachelor’s in history from Niagara University and her master’s in history from Canisius College.

She continued post-graduate studies at the University of Notre Dame, Catholic University and the University at Buffalo.

Sister Barbara’s religious life was spent in the field of education. She taught junior high school for 22 years in many schools in the Diocese of Buffalo.

She served as principal of Madonna High School and was president of Trocaire College from 1988 to 1998.

Survivors include two brothers, Anthony and Joseph; and a sister, Karen Miller.

A vigil service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday at Mercy Center Convent, 625 Abbott Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Mercy Center Chapel.
