Board OKs plan to resurface all-weather track for $300,000

OLEAN – The all-weather track at the Olean Intermediate/Middle School has not been resurfaced since it was put in place 14 years ago.

The School Board voted this week to resurface the track at a cost of more than $300,000.

The original plan called for the board to spend $237,000 on the track project, with an additional $43,000 to go on the district’s tennis courts. That resurfacing was expected to give the track the same stretch of time before the next round of resurfacing was to be needed, District Superintendent Colleen Taggerty said at that time.

The board decided, however, that an additional five to six years would be a better solution.

The new plan adds nearly $100,000 to the project but is planned to extend the life of the surface to around 20 years.

“We are going from the 200 grade level to the 300 level and expect to get five to six additional years of use before it will need to be done again,” Taggerty said.

Money for the project will come from the Capital Projects fund.

Some of the funds will also go to repair or replace items in the high school auditorium, Taggerty said.

The stage needs new rigging, lights, curtains and electrical work, the superintendent said.
