President must not give in to extremists

President Obama must not give in to the tea party extremists, who have not respected him as president since the day he took office. And not just because of the shutdown or the debt ceiling. If the president caves in and allows a law – the Affordable Care Act, which has been legally enacted in a process defined for 200-plus years by our Constitution – to be overturned simply because a radical minority in Congress has decided so, then the very power and meaning of the presidency will be made null and void. It would be a seismic shift in the very core of the system of checks and balances.

If Obama gives in, then his presidency and the presidencies of those to come will become meaningless.
