Albion driver injured in Orleans County crash

A 24-year-old Albion man was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester after his sedan crashed head-on with an 18-wheel tractor-trailer tank truck in the 5000 block of South Gravel Road in the Town of Shelby about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Stephen G. Thomas II was driving north on South Gravel when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a southbound tractor hauling a tanker trailer containing refrigerated liquid oxygen, according to Orleans County Sheriff’s deputies.

The collision sent Thomas’ car to the east side of the road where it came to rest in a residential yard. Thomas was trapped in his vehicle for about 45 minutes before Shelby firefighters were able to extract him, deputies. His current medical condition at the Rochester hospital was unavailable.

The tanker truck driver, Shawn W. Scott, 32, of Derby, did not appear injured but was taken to Medina Memorial Hospital by a Medina Fire Department ambulance for a medical checkup. The truck and tanker are owned by the Linde Group LLC.

The tractor sustained heavy damage but the tank was not compromised and the approximately 1,000 gallons of liquid oxygen on board was not released. There was minimal spillage of diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid at the crash scene but Shelby firefighters quickly contained that road damage. The accident remained under investigation Tuesday night by both the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office and the State Police.

State Route 63, which is South Gravel Road, remained closed late Tuesday between Ryan Road and West Shelby Road, according to the sheriff.
