The town board will discuss the possibility of putting a memorial honoring Sgt. Brett E. Gornewicz in Robert O. Smith Park at a work session on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Alden Town Hall.
The concept for the memorial for Gornewicz, who was killed in Afghanistan on Nov. 3, 2012, was developed by several friends of the slain 27-year-old Army Reservist, said Alden resident Paul Zinter at the board meeting on Monday, Oct. 7. There would be no cost to the town.
“It would be totally donated,” he said.
The idea calls for a 5 feet by 5 feet parcel of land in Robert O. Smith Park, Zinter said.
People today live in a “disposable society,” Zinter said, and forget about the past.
“Things come and go,” he said. “We don’t want Brett to come and go. Yes, he’s gone, but we don’t want him forgotten.”
The work session is being held on Tuesday because of Columbus Day.
