Salido KOs Cruz to win world title

Orlando Cruz’s dream of becoming a world champion was crushed in convincing fashion Saturday night at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Orlando Salido became a three-time world champion when he scored a seventh-round knockout of Cruz, the Puerto Rican fighter who has lived and trained in Buffalo since 2010 under long-time trainer Juan DeLeon, during the two’s bout for the vacant WBO featherweight championship. The fight was the co-feature bout of welterweight champion Tim Bradley versus Juan Manuel Marquez card, which didn’t end in time for this edition.

Salido ended it with a combination that floored Cruz, who was losing on the judges’ scoring cards according to multiple media outlets. Salido won via knockout for the 28th time in his career and improved to 40-12-2. Cruz, who gave a game effort, fell to 20-3-1.
