Let’s raise awareness and help the homeless

Homeless Memorial Day, a national movement, has been sponsored locally by the Homeless Coalition of Western New York. It is held on the first day of winter – the longest night of the year. It is a day of reflection to raise awareness for those in our community who died unsheltered and unnoticed in the midst of the day-to-day busyness of our personal lives.

For the sake of those who passed and our own well-being, we need to provide a respectful memorial and remembrance for those we sadly allowed to slip out from amongst us like dust in the wind. We need to remember those who, in life, endured persistent hardships. Homeless people are more at risk of trauma, malnutrition, chronic illness, disability and early death.

This memorial day for the unknown homeless takes place in the midst of winter darkness. Yet in the midst of sadness, we are a people of hope and faith. Following the longest night of the year, the days start getting longer, along with the possibility of better days ahead.

Please spread the good word about Homeless Memorial Day, and join us at 5 p.m. on Dec. 21 at the Matt Urban Hope Center in Buffalo.
