Health department offers free cancer screenings

More than 1,600 uninsured or underinsured Erie County residents will get free screenings for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, thanks to a $187,500 grant to the county from the state Health Department, County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein announced Wednesday.◄

Under an arrangement with the county and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, the state has paid for these screenings since 1998.

Since the Cancer Society can no longer afford to staff the screenings, the county will handle them.

To coordinate the program, the grant provides for three new full-time positions – community coalition coordinator, senior case manager for cancer services and medical record technician.
