Case of West Nile virus confirmed in Gasport man

LOCKPORT – A young Gasport man has contracted the first laboratory-confirmed human case of West Nile virus in Niagara County, Health Department director Daniel J. Stapleton reported Thursday.

The man, who is believed to have contracted the disease in Gasport, is recovering at home after being hospitalized, Stapleton said. To date, the county has not reported any West Nile virus in mosquito pools, birds or horses, he added. The virus is spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes.

Stapleton advised residents to eliminate standing water near their homes where mosquitoes might live and to minimize their exposure to mosquitoes by wearing insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing.
