Local volleyball teams keep rolling along

Volleyball continues to be the hottest sport for area colleges this fall.

The University at Buffalo found itself ranked 65 in the latest NCAA Division I women’s volleyball rankings. There are 332 Division I teams.

The Bulls are 14-3 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference. And those three losses came to teams ranked in the top 60 – Ohio State (21), Ohio (30) and Ball State (59).

Buffalo plays at Bowling Green on Friday and at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday.

Meanwhile in Division III, Buffalo State has won 10 straight matches, one shy of the school record.

Samantha Parente was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week. The junior outside hitter had 58 kills and a .424 hitting percentage in a four-win week for the Bengals. She was the MVP at the Nazareth Golden Flyer Invitational.

The Bengals will look to tie their school record on Friday when they play Oneonta in a SUNYAC match on Friday at New Paltz.

Buffalo State is 15-6 overall and 3-0 in SUNYAC play.

Wier leads Fisher golfers

Thad Wier is tearing up the golf course for St. John Fisher this fall.

The senior from East Aurora won the individual title at the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Championships. He shot a combined seven-under par 135, including a second round of 65 at the Blue Heron Hills Country Club in Macedon.

The Cardinals are ranked 13th in the nation.

Wier also was the top finisher at the Fisher Collegiate Invitational and at the Empire 8 Fall Championship where he shot a 147 (73-74) at the Yahnundasis Country Club in New Hartford.
