Mary Higgins, the mother of Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, died late Monday after a brief illness. She was 82.

Born Mary Breen, Mrs. Higgins was a school teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Buffalo’s Old First Ward, and also worked for the Erie County Auto Bureau.

In addition, she was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and was one of the founders of its annual Election Day Mass.

“My mom had a great charisma,” Higgins said. “She was very social and enjoyed every day the riches of family and the gift of wonderful friendships.”

Mrs. Higgins loved song and especially enjoyed singing happy birthday to her children and grandchildren, the congressman said.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Higgins, a bricklayer, member of the Buffalo Common Council and a commissioner on the New York State Workers Compensation Board.

In addition to the congressman, survivors include a daughter, Trish Glose; three sons, Mark, Tim and Danny; and a brother, Mike Breen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 450 Abbott Road.
