GCC plans to add more student housing on Batavia campus

BATAVIA – Genesee Community College plans to expand student housing on the Batavia campus with the addition of two buildings and 64 suites.

On-campus housing began in the late 1980s with the increase in enrollment to the current 7,200 full- and part-time students. There now will be 451 units in 11 buildings. Recent approval came from the county Planning Board for use of the site.

Plans call for construction to begin this month so the units can be occupied when the fall semester starts next August. Each will have a living area, bedrooms and kitchenette.

Housing has become a priority for the college, with about 25 percent of the students coming from outside the area, including 130 from foreign countries.

Today, the complex houses 387 students who pay from $6,050 to $7,450 single or double for the garden-type apartments that can house up to four students.

Two-year colleges do not have the resources, including finances, to provide living quarters so it is turned over to separate corporations.

The GCC Foundation, which raises money for scholarships, bought the present housing 12 years ago. The separate area is within easy walking distance of the college.
