Basils acquire Jim Ball car dealership

Robert Basil and the Basil family of auto dealers have acquired the Jim Ball GMC Buick Cadillac dealership in Orchard Park, bolstering the family’s presence in the car-sales business in the region.

The deal was completed last week; the terms were not disclosed. The 3475 Southwestern Blvd. location was renamed Robert Basil Buick GMC Cadillac.

Basil also owns a Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac dealership in Fredonia. His nephew, David Basil, will run that dealership. Robert Basil will operate the Orchard Park location and now has a much shorter commute: he lives in Orchard Park.

Robert Basil said he and his family members liked the Jim Ball location and its franchises. The Basils have known Ball for years, and he was “very gracious” to the Basils during the sale process, Robert Basil said.

Basil said Ball had decided the time was right to sell the business. Ball could not be reached to comment Tuesday afternoon.

“Jim left it to us in pretty good shape, and we’re going to invest in it and expand it,” he said. Ball will stay aboard as a senior sales representative at the dealership, Basil said.

The dealership presently has about 50 full-time and eight part-time employees. Basil said the dealership will add 15 to 20 employees in the near term as it grows.

The location will also get a physical upgrade, with improvements such as repainting and new furniture.

Ball is a longtime area car dealer. He bought the former Austin Pontiac dealership in the mid-1980s, and in the mid- 1990s he consolidated the Ray Laks Buick dealership and Jack Stephens Buick and GMC truck franchises into his operation.

Ball’s Orchard Park dealership moved into its present location in 1997. He added Cadillac to his lineup in 2006. In past years, he has had Saab and Suzuki franchises in the region and also sold Pontiacs.

Robert Basil is one of six brothers who are in the car business, with a combination of new- and used-car dealerships around the region.
