Where we live: West Seneca

West Seneca

A 15-month celebration of the 150th anniversary of Fourteen Holy Helpers Parish, on Indian Church Road in Gardenville, begins at noon today with a Mass celebrated by the Rev. David Bellittiere.

A reception follows in Msgr. Ebner Parish Hall.

The Diocese of Buffalo purchased the church and its properties from the Community of True Inspiration, known as the Ebenezers. Its first Mass was celebrated on Jan. 6, 1865, by Bishop John Timon.

• Fall Festival at Burchfield Nature & Art Center, 2001 Union Road, takes place from noon to 4 p.m. today. The event includes nature, craft and gardening exhibits; entertainment; raffles; refreshments; and activities for children.

• The West Seneca School Board meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday in room 200 at West Elementary school, 1397 Orchard Park Road.

• The Planning Board meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 1250 Union Road. Public hearings are scheduled on two proposed subdivisions: 51-lot Clearview Estates, which would be built adjacent to Route 219, and 21-lot Veronica Estates, off Seneca Creek Road.

• Ghost stories will be told Thursday by mystery writer and storyteller Michael Nethercott, who also will present his book – Seance Society – at the West Seneca Public Library.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library at 1300 Union Road. The program isn’t recommended for children.

The ghost stories come by way of Nethercott’s Irish family; both of his mother’s parents emigrated from County Kerry. Meanwhile, the award-winning author’s novel is the first installment of a series set in the 1950s that features Nethercott’s detective team of O’Nelligan and Plunkett, whose adventures previously appeared in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine.

West Seneca is the only stop in New York during the current tour by Nethercott, who is a lifelong resident of the Northeast.
